| The Wirral peninsula has more than its share of sporting pursuits. Golf is a major event even when the Royal Liverpool club is not playing host to the British Open . Sportsmen make the most of the onshore winds with sand-yachting and kite-flying to international standard. It is more than a sporting paradise. Wirral has a reputation for ship-building, and Port Sunlight is a village built by soap magnate and art collector William Lever to improve his workers’ life-style. It houses his outstanding collection of art and statuary at the Lady Lever Gallery. Apart from picturesque villages Wirral contains the Ness botanical gardens, Williamson art gallery, Blue Planet aquarium, Spaceport (a trip into space), the Boat Museum, and Cheshire Oaks shopping outlet. |

Halton also offers Norton Priory (right), an award-winning site that is the remains of an Augustinian settlement which has a twice life-size statue of St. Christopher, a museum, a walled garden, and woodland walks.
